ACRE’s residency takes place every summer in rural Southwest Wisconsin. The residency facilities include numerous buildings which provide for expansive communal work spaces, a screen-printing studio, an outdoor wood shop, an art and tech facility, a sound studio, a fibers studio, a ceramics studio, and a growing high fire studio.

Residents have the opportunity to expand upon their individual practices and take part in optional programming within a collaborative community.

living within the play,

poor farm / summer 2021, 2022

living within the play is a platform for inquiry, play, and party, giving artists the “stage” or “playing field” that can collapse forms from daily life that builds on the natural byproducts of this shared experience (responsiveness) towards a cumulative public occurrence (resonance). My time here has been fundamental to my creative making and teaching practices.

How might we shift supremacy based practices, systems, expectations, and culture to a more care-based (healthy) model?

An initial understanding of these questions lead me to believe that a proposed methodology of using care, commons, and collaboration to create healthier labor conditions and practices while vary based on the size, scale, values, and goals for each organization. My research hopes to uncover foundational pillars of this work that might serve as anchors for these organizations. They include (in no particular order as of right now): Trust-based networks, sustainable labor practices, shared ambitions and values, equitable power structures.

for six voices, perhaps

acre  / july 2020

What happens when we spend time together, outside, in confidence, in silence, and presencing—create a text to be read out loud by six voices; how to distill and consolidate without sense, honoring the fragment? Material, temporal, extruding, easter egg. Creating a work to be handled. All photos of moments in progress of the Annas’ 2020 cohort on residency at ACRE working on For Six Voices.
